Abortion methods

There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical. The right option for you will depend on how far along you are, your health, and your preferences.

Your doctor will discuss which method is most appropriate for your situation.

Which method is available to you?

Enter the first day of your last period to see which options may be available based on how far along you are. This is just an estimate, and the exact gestational age can only be confirmed by a doctor using an ultrasound.

If you're not sure of the exact date, your best estimate is fine.

The next section covers what to expect during recovery.

Recovery and aftercare

Most people can return to normal activities within a few days. Here's what to expect:

Physical recovery

  • Bleeding: Light bleeding or spotting is normal for 1–2 weeks
  • Cramping: May continue for a few days, similar to period pain
  • Return to activities: Most people feel ready within 1–3 days, but listen to your body
  • Periods: Your period should return within 4–6 weeks

When to seek medical attention

Contact your doctor or go to A&E if you experience:

  • Heavy bleeding (soaking more than 2 pads per hour)
  • Fever above 38°C that lasts more than 24 hours
  • Severe abdominal pain that doesn't improve with rest
  • Unusual or foul-smelling discharge

Follow-up care

Your clinic will schedule a follow-up appointment to check that everything is healing well. This is also a good time to discuss contraception if you'd like to prevent future unplanned pregnancies.
